When the World is Burning…What Do You Do?
Last week I talked about the crazy state of the world and how important it is to appreciate the people in your life. Because anything can happen at any time. And just a couple of days ago the fires started burning right in my backyard.
I’m lucky that I’m not in wine country, but I know so many people who do live there. Or who have family or friends who live there. There are so many people who have been affected by the wine country firestorm and there isn’t yet an end in sight. I’ve been talking to friends and colleagues in the wedding industry along with clients and it’s just heartbreaking.
It’s hard to continue to work or try to plan a wedding amongst the sheer devastation happening not just in my backyard, but in other areas as well. People have lost homes, businesses, and those they love. Lives have been upended and changed forever. And it just makes me want to cry.
And you can’t help but ask yourself, what do you do? What do you do when the world is burning?
I’ve struggled this week trying to write wedding planning tips. Because while weddings matter, when you compare it to what is happening, there is no comparison. Planning a wedding becomes secondary.
And if you’re like me, you want to help. You want to do something to help those who are suffering or struggling. But, at the same time, you feel helpless. How do you help? What can you do?
The only answer I’ve been able to come up with is anything. Do anything. Help someone. Help anyone.
You can donate money to local organizations, open your home, volunteer your time or donate supplies. You can help one person, save a dog or feed some people. Anything you do can perhaps make someone’s life a little bit better, or a little more bearable. I’m going to do anything I can and if you want to help, I hope you will too. We’re stronger together and that’s how we’ll make it through, together.
