The joy of breathing

You know that old adage, you only want what you don’t have? Or the one that goes, you only miss something when it’s gone? Breathing is one of those things. It’s just a simple bodily function, but when you can’t breathe or when you actually pay attention to your breathing it’s amazing how much you appreciate it.
I wouldn’t say breathing is a favorite of mine, but the act of breathing and the resulting effect it has is something I really enjoy. When you focus on breathing it has a calming effect. Like hugs, it’s instantaneous. Your body relaxes and so does your mind. The chaos around you and the bees buzzing all over your brain go on a little siesta. You can just be, even if it’s just for a moment or the span of a few breaths.
One of the resulting effects that I enjoy of breathing is that you also smell. And while there are tons of not so great smells you get bombarded with, there are some lovely ones too. Some of my favorites are the smell of baking or cooking with garlic. The smell of a Christmas tree, I love that (right now, I’m totally inhaling a tree). The smell of coffee or fresh laundry or a gardenia.
So take a moment right now and just breathe. Like the song, “And breathe, just breathe…oh breathe, just breathe…”. If you’re into yoga or meditation you can take 5 or 10 minutes. But, if you’re not and this sounds too hippie-dippie for you, don’t worry. It doesn’t have to be this long thing where you close your eyes and center your soul. Just literally take a minute and breathe. Inhale and exhale and if you can get up next to a smell you love, inhale that while you’re breathing. It could be something as easy as smelling the perfume on your wrist or taking a whiff of some coffee or your lunch. Focus on your breathing for just a little while and it will calm you, relax you and make you smile without you even knowing it.
