Wedding Inspiration for the Non-traditional Bride from the 2015 Emmys

Did you get a chance to watch this year’s Emmy Awards?  I  was on a plane to Paris (yes, I know I can’t complain), so I missed it, but I did get a chance to read up on it yesterday.  Big congrats to Jon Hamm for finally winning for Mad Men and to Viola Davis for making history.  Even bigger kudos on what she had to say about it too.  Not just power to women, but to women of color.  Love it.

Besides the show itself and all of it’s winners (yay Game of Thrones!), we can’t forget the red carpet. The red carpet is fun to check out not just for itself, but because of the wedding inspiration you can get from it.  So, as usual I picked out my favorites to help inspire you for your upcoming wedding or event. The running theme of my picks this year are that they are all non-traditional dresses .  These are not your typical gowns, which keeps it interesting but is also a great inspiration for the non-traditional bride.  You know who you are.   So, let’s jump right in!

Perhaps the most talked about dress of the night came from Kerry Washington in this silver Marc Jacobs.  It’s not hard to see why, not only is it gorgeous on her, the detailing is beautiful.  How awesome would this be as your second dress of the night?  Yes, it’s a bit shiny but it’s your day!  Go for it.  Or if you just can’t wear something like this, there is a lot of great stuff here for your wedding design.  Just the shoulder detailing alone could be a gorgeous touch to stationery and invitations or table decor.  With a slight 20’s feel to it, the scallop fan design is lovely.  And her hair is looking pretty cute too.  I’m all about the messy slightly undone look.

People tend to fear prints, but don’t!  They can really add something.  Case and point, Zoe Kazan’s Miu Miu dress.  The red is striking and the slightly psychedelic print just draws you in.  Would you wear a printed dress for your wedding or event?  I can promise you that all eyes will be on you.  If not, consider a printed dress for your bridesmaids or used in your wedding decor.

Plunging necklines might not be the first thing you think of when you think wedding, but done well is still totally tasteful.  If you run on the sexy side, take a cue from Emma Robert’s pale Jenny Packham dress.  Its got lots of style and isn’t too revealing.  The waist detailing and necklace really pull it all together.  It looks both sexy and stylish, but elegant and effortless.

Like prints, people tend to shy away from yellow perhaps because it’s not the easiest color to wear and because not too many items are made in yellow.  But, don’t be afraid especially when you have something this lovely. Taylor Schilling’s Stella McCartney dress is so sunny and airy.  Yellow may or may not be right for your wedding, but consider a different style dress like this one shoulder.  It has a boho vibe to it especially with the gathering at the bottom which would be perfect for that outdoor wedding or destination wedding.  Usually one shoulders are quite bold, but the delicateness of this one is really nice and would be perfect for a wedding.  And I love her hair and makeup!  Easy, but beautiful.

Last but not least, is this non-traditional number.  Ok, so yes she’s young and yes she’s wearing pants, but Kiernan Shipka’s Dior Haute Couture outfit is something to take note of.  If you aren’t a dress kind of gal, this could be right up your alley.  Still feminine and stylish, but without the skirt. You’ll look very cool at your wedding.  Or if you’re a guest, this would be a cute outfit to wear to a wedding as well.
