Wedding Wednesdays Q&A: Does the Ring Bearer Carry the Rings?

Wedding Wednesdays Q&A by Jamie Chang Destination Wedding Planner of Mango Muse Events

Happy hump day and welcome to an all new Wedding Wednesdays Q&A!  Today we are talking about your ring bearer:  My little nephew is going to be our ring bearer and he’s so cute!  I’m excited for him to be a part of the wedding, but I’m a little worried about the wedding rings.  Does the ring bearer usually hold the rings?  Or does someone else?

Yes, the ring bearer is definitely a misnomer!  That is his role, but no I don’t recommend that you have him actually hold on to the wedding rings. You can have the ring bearer hold fake rings or no rings at all, either is ok.  But, someone will still need to hold on to the rings and you’ll want to have an adult hold them.  It ensures that the rings won’t get lost and then you will have someone responsible in charge of them.

Some couples have the maid of honor hold the groom’s ring and the best man hold the bride’s ring, but I always recommend that you have the best man hold both the rings.  This isn’t because he is the most responsible, but because he’ll have pockets and he doesn’t have to hold on to anything else (like a bouquet), so it makes it easy to remember. If you have a friend or family member officiating, you can have them hold the rings, but I always think it’s easiest if the best man takes on this role.
