4 Reasons Why You Should Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer

In a recent Facebook live, we talked about a big fear many couples have – that their wedding photos won’t turn out well.  And one of the easiest ways to make sure that doesn’t happen is to hire a professional wedding photographer.

While you can save money by having your friend photograph your wedding or by hiring an amateur, if you’re worried about your photos, going pro is key.  And today I’m going to share 4 reasons why you should hire a professional.

Now before we dive in, it’s important you know that not all professionals are good.  As with anything, there are people who are good and not so good.  Make sure you vet your wedding photographer and feel comfortable with them before signing on the dotted line.

4 reasons why you should hire a professional wedding photographer

1. They have experience.  Weddings are really it’s own beast when it comes to photography.  It isn’t a studio session where you have time to adjust and try different things.  Weddings are living, breathing, dynamic events with people and surprises.  And it’s a one time only event which means there are no do-overs.

A professional wedding photographer knows what to expect and how to adjust if necessary.  They know how to capture moments and be in the right spot at the right time.   They know how to work with a schedule.  This isn’t something you can learn overnight, it takes practice and experience with different people in different places.

And don’t forget, weddings are all about people and professional wedding photographers know how to deal with various personalities.  Just think about your family and the personalities you have.  The experience a professional wedding photographer has means they know what they’re doing which goes a long way towards ensuring you have good photos.

2. They have knowledge.  In addition to experience, a professional wedding photographer also has knowledge.  Lighting is a huge factor in how your photos will turn out.  It’s also in my opinion, very technical.  So, understanding the different types of lighting and how to use it or adjust for it is important.  And a professional will have that knowledge.

They also understand composition and angles.  Even if you look gorgeous, the wrong angle could be very unflattering.  Or when it comes to your family photos composition can make a big difference in how nice that framed photo looks.  And those artistic photos you love?  It’s partially their eye, but also an understanding of negative space, composition, angles, and lighting.

And lastly, they know how to edit.  A good part of why your photos look nice (or not nice) has to do with the post-processing.  This typically involves color correcting, cropping or adjusting the photos after the wedding to refine and polish it.  And the knowledge to know what to do with a photo is key to this process and to good photos.

3. They have pro tools. Let’s face it, professionals have professional tools.  And professional tools are always going to be better than anything you or your friend uses. Your professional wedding photographer will have a good quality camera (or cameras), multiple lenses for different kinds of shots and lighting equipment.  All of their gear helps to create those awesome photos.

In addition to the equipment, they also have the software tools needed to do all the post-processing.  And they have access to professional albums and printing.   What most couples don’t realize is that professional photographers have access to much better quality albums that only sell to those in the profession.  This means the only way to get that awesome album is to do it through your photographer.

4. They give you peace of mind.  All of that leads to the most important part, peace of mind.  Professional wedding photographers have the experience and knowledge and know what to do.  They also have superior tools and know how to use them.  Which means you can sit back and relax.

You can feel good knowing that your wedding is in the hands of a professional.  Someone capable and able to do everything you need them to do and all the things you didn’t know you needed them to do.  And that peace of mind is priceless.  Because if you know you’re in good hands, you’ll be relaxed.  Which means you’ll look better in your photos resulting in good photos.

Hiring a professional wedding photographer will put you at ease and alleviate the fear of bad photos.  Now all you need to do is figure out is which photographer is right for you!  That is a post for another day, but with so many great photographers, I’m sure you’ll find one that suits you.
